this week marks the 11th year of the war in afghanistan. romney took heat for not mentioning afghanistan during his convention speech. but the new mitt romney finally has a position on the war. >> in afghanistan i'll pursue a real and successful transition to afghan security forces by the end of 2014. >> that just happens to be the exact same position of the current president of the united states. this guy named barack obama. romney didn't offer any additional specifics, so it's hard to tell if he has really any disagreement with the president over afghanistan. the same goes for iran. >> i'll put the leaders of iran on notice that the united states and our friends and allies will prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. >> if you believe the new mitt romney, he's going to prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. president obama says the same thing, but mitt romney doesn't say how had he will prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. he also doesn't tell you who is advising him on all of these matters. one of his foreign

we don't want another afghanistan. that's not the right course for us. i'd have put the sanctions in place earlier, but it's good we have them. drones are being use and i support that entirely. we're going to be finished by 2014 and when i'm president, weal make sure we bring our troops out by the end of 2014. >> can we come to the conclusion that mitt romney was out of his league in foreign policy in the debate last night? he was reduced to generic talking points and bland platitudes like this claim about an apology tour. >> then the president began what i called an apology tour of going to various nations in the middle east and criticizing america. they looked at that and saw weakness. then when there was dissidence in the streets of tehran, the president was silent. >> nothing mitt romney just said was true, starting with the notion of me apologizing. this has been probably the biggest whopper that's been told during the course of this campaign. and every fact checker and every reporter has looked at it. the governor has said this is not true. >> romn

he voted against a suicide prevention program for veterans returning from iraq and afghanistan. for every combat loss we have every day, we have 18 people who came back from afghanistan and iraq that commit suicide. the veterans are forgotten in this political gamut that he has in d.c. he's intent to make sure the wealthiest get the tax cuts. he forgets that the people we send over to fight the war, they deserve the best of us and not the worst of us. >> i want to play congressman cantor's closing statement. here it is. i want you to respond to for our audience. >> none of these negative attacks do anything to create a job, do anything to educate a child, or do anything to bring down the deficit. but attacks at character assassination make it a lot harder to solve problems, to compromise to sit down and get something done. >> coming from the face of republican obstructionism, how do you respond to that, quickly. >> well, it's an incomprehensible jumble of words. i was presenting facts and he doesn't like the facts.

bin laden is dead, our troops are out of iraq, we have a date certain to pull troops out of afghanistan, the president proved himself on foreign policy in the 2008 debate and he's going to have to do it again tomorrow night. i'm joined by michelle goldberg, writer nor "newsweek" and also howard fineman, great to have both of you with us tonight. howard, will secretary of state hillary clinton's comments help the president in any way? >> no, they will not. as a matter of fact, having hillary clinton step up and take full responsibility, whatever that precisely means, just makes it look more political. certainly in the eyes of republicans. and will be considered fresh meat for the republicans to go after. you can be sure that mitt romney will go after it as hard as he can, as fast as he can, in part because his people love it. because they can try to make it a question of character and because joe biden gave them an opening last week by saying that the white house and he and the president knew nothing about it, which sounded like explaining slightly too much. so you can expect the preside

tell the soldiers that are coming back from iraq, back from afghanistan that they're not better off. the president needs to do a full throated defense of his presidency and not allow governor romney to define his presidency for him. this helps significantly. >> and, chris, quickly do we hear mitt romney continue to say that president obama doesn't understand the economy? does this put him in a box? >> well, to some extent but governor romney is going to use his statistics to paint his picture and we saw that. and i think this is one of the things that i would, you know, strongly recommend to the obama campaign. romney was a blizzard of statistics in that debate but a lot of them weren't true. the president has the ability to use statistics to attack and undercut governor romney's arguments. he needs to go into the next debate. a lot of people are going to be watching given the last debate and he needs to go right at governor romney and completely destroy this notion that reinventing himself, let alone introducing and proposing the same policies are going to create a different outcome

one day he has a certain strong view about staying in afghanistan, but then on monday night he agrees with the withdrawal. same thing in iraq. and almost every issue that was discussed on monday night, governor romney agreed with the president with some nuances. but this is quite a different set of foreign policy views than he had earlier in the campaign. and my concern, which i've expressed previously in a public way, is that sometimes i don't sense that he has thought through these issues as thoroughly as he should have and he gets advice from his campaign staff that he then has to adjust or modify as he goes along. i think there are some very, very strong neoconservative views that are presented by the governor that i have some trouble with. >> has not thought through the issues. that's kind of an academic way of calling a guy an empty suit, isn't it? president obama acknowledged powell's endorsement today in virginia. >> i was proud and humbled to learn that we have colin powell's support in this campaign. i'm grateful to him for his lifetime of service to this country, both as a
